Tiff Needell leaving Fifth Gear
So the cat’s out of the bag and after 17 years on the hit automotive show Fifth Gear, Quest have decided not to include Tiff Needell in the latest series.
Tiff originally spent 15 years as a presenter on BBC’s Top Gear, and when the old programme was axed in 2001, before the Clarkson, Hammond, and May era, Tiff was instrumental in taking the all new Fifth Gear to Channel 5, appearing in the first ever series, and arguably has made it the show we all love and enjoy. There has already been upset across the internet, with fans of Tiff disappointed with the move, but the decision has been made so we can only look forward.
Tiff has been working with us at Lovecars for over 18 months as a guest presenter and first featured in our exclusive Rolls-Royce Black Badge Trilogy video. This was an extremely exciting time for us adding a new presenter to the team, and especially one with such iconic status in the automotive journalism world.
Paul Woodman, presenter on Lovecars said “Tiff is somebody who we have all looked up to and admired for many years, both Top Gear and of course latterly on Fifth Gear. It’s been such a huge honour to work with him and get to know him personally. Even if he is super grumpy in the morning before his first coffee!”.
There aren’t many people in the automotive world worthy of the title ‘legend’, but Tiff is certainly one of them. He was mentioned only last week in an interview by James May as “the best man at driving a car, and talking at the same time” and this week he is featured on Chris Harris’ Collecting Cars Podcast.
Tiff was only supposed to appear on Lovecars for the one project (we couldn’t afford more!) but he was so impressed with the output from this first video and what we achieved on such a tiny budget, we haven’t been able to get rid of him since!
We have gone on to make dozens of features with Tiff at Lovecars, including many exclusives, such as Tiff in a Tesla race car, but the main focus has always been the on-screen relationship between Tiff and Paul, an example of which can be seen in one of Tiff’s favourite videos at the launch of the new BMW 8 Series in Spain.
We have so much exciting stuff in the pipeline including a completely separate project which means Tiff may be back on your screen sooner than you think…. An early teaser of which can be viewed below!

Finally, we wish Jonny, Vicki, JP and the whole Fifth Gear many continued years of success… but can’t help feeling that your loss is very much our gain 🙂
